Personality:
Abusive parents, a great betrayal, and the untimely death of a girl have made it terrifying and very difficult for Bruce to trust anyone anymore. His father's abusive behavior drove Bruce to believe humans are inherently selfish, he paints people's actions with malice and his brutal honesty makes it almost impossible for anyone to like him. People's first impression of him is that of an obnoxious asshole - and first impressions last, unfortunately.

An abusive father and a neglectful mother discouraged young Bruce from relying on his parents for guidance, thus he faced life's many obstacles all alone. He learned through trial and error while influence of external factors and his reaction hereunto molded his present brutal principles and negative view of the world. Bruce's realization that none would catch and comfort him should he fail has made him terrified of failure and incompetency.

This independence has made him too proud. It sunk him to the point of megalomania. He is too competitive and confident for his own good. His withdrawn attitude, a tendency to do things on his own, and focus on self-interest have made it impossible for him to form friendships and meaningful relationships.

It may seem that Bruce is far beyond redemption, however the romantic relationship he had with his late girlfriend proves otherwise. Somewhere deep in Bruce's heart of hearts is a person trapped in his prison of pain and fear, and the keys to his cell are relentless attempts of friendship to get through to him, acceptance, and unconditional love. Keys that his late girlfriend used to free Bruce, but her death has since sent Bruce back deeper down into the prison once more.

His deeply hurt soul manifests itself through Bruce's practice of having full-on audible conversations supposedly with his late girlfriend and from an observers' perspective - he's a lone man talking to himself or an imaginary friend. This has made many people think he's crazy, schizophrenic, or delusional. Maybe he is...?

Likes:
- A challenge. Bruce handicaps himself into catching one Pokémon per area. If the Pokémon faints or flees, then he cannot catch any more.
- Power. Whereas ordinary Trainers nickname their Pokémon out of love, Bruce does it to assert dominance. There is no mentor-student, there is only general-soldier. It is to show Pokémon that they are nothing but his dispensable tools of war, his means to an end.
- His late girlfriend. He never moved on from her death; everything about her is Bruce's soft spot.
- Hobbies and talents include: listening to classic rock and metal music, gambling, workout, martial arts, singing, and cooking.

Dislikes:
- Failure. Bruce releases Pokémon who faint.
- Opposition. Anyone who speaks out against him or dares to cross him will receive deadly force in response.
- Conversation. He is quick to shut down all attempts at relationship forming.

Motivations:
Basically: Isaiah 14:14.

Bruce seeks to surpass the skill of legendary Pokémon Trainer Red, intimidate legendary Pokémon with his strength, and make Arceus himself acknowledge his power.

There is also the less creepy but virtually inaccessible desire to find true love and acceptance.

Fears:
- Attachment; the fear of loss.
- Failure.
- A stronger opponent.
- His past.

History

Family:
Bruce is born to the richest family in Littleroot Town, Hoenn. He is the son of Thomas and Dr. Martha Mathers.

The scientific community credits Thomas Mathers for his innovative contribution to essential Pokémon Trainer merchandise, and Dr. Martha Mathers for her studies on Pokémon physiology. Excessive dedication to their job rewarded the Mathers family with immense wealth, but it cost their son Bruce a healthy family.

Bruce suffered from parental abuse behind the closed doors and within the walls of Mathers Manor. His father had unreasonably high expectations and nothing could please the old man.
Excellent marks in Pokémon Trainers' School wasn't enough because Thomas would only acknowledge perfect grades. Because of this, Thomas often called young Bruce "a stupid and worthless waste of oxygen and seminal discharge." Thomas saw his son as an extension of himself.

Martha was just as bad. She spent most of her career overseas away from Bruce. As a result, she missed out on Bruce's milestones through the years. The job consumed her so much that she was absent during the time Bruce was an infant who needed breastfeeding. When Bruce graduated top of his class, Martha was not there. In her place was Thomas, disappointed over Bruce's imperfect marks. On the rare occasions Bruce talked to his mother, the conversation was mostly one-sided in favor of Martha's stories.

The Prodigy:
At a young age of 12, Bruce had already grown into a top-notch Pokémon Trainer. He earned a Treecko from Professor Birch. Since then, Bruce had built a terrifying reputation that the locals gave him the moniker: "The Pain".

Hoenn League:
When Bruce turned 14, he left home and took the Hoenn Pokémon League challenge. Along the way, he gathered a team of mighty Pokémon and practically tore through everyone.

By the time he was 16, Bruce had finally gained his final Hoenn Badge, and Treecko had fully evolved into a Sceptile. Bruce spent a night in a Pokémon Center and on that same night Sceptile stole all of Bruce's badges.

The Betrayal:
The following morning, Bruce woke up in a secluded forest and found himself naked and devoid of his belongings.

In front of him was Sceptile, along with every Pokémon Bruce had captured throughout his adventure. The Pokémon looked down at Bruce with anger, pity, and contempt. Bruce's eight Hoenn badges were on the ground muddied and scratched all over.

Horrified and utterly confused, Bruce cried out to Sceptile for answers. Apparently, the entire time they'd been together, Sceptile had been misinterpreting Bruce's personality. Sceptile saw Bruce as a tyrannical Trainer who didn't treat Pokémon as friends but instead weapons to serve his own self-interests.

However, Sceptile was mistaken. Bruce loved his Pokémon. Bruce's social inexperience and lack of affection caused Sceptile to view its trainer in a very negative light. This foreshadows the man Bruce would soon become after all the unpleasant chain of events to come had played out.

Sceptile revealed that it had been plotting a rebellion for years. In secret, he'd been leading astray the minds of every new addition to the team. Sceptile waited and when Bruce was close to achieving his dream - it launched its betrayal.

As he cried uncontrollably over his deep emotional wound, Bruce tried his best to explain everything. He tried to correct all the misconceptions. But, Sceptile's hold over the Pokémon were much too strong. In response, the Pokémon crushed and incinerated all of Bruce's badges therefore undoing his two years of work. After the rebellion's success, all his former Pokémon fled, and it is unknown what became of each of them.

Bruce had lost everything.

Life as Bryan Winchester:
Two years after the betrayal in Hoenn, a chain of misadventures and happenings brought a traumatized, depressed, and amnesiac 18-year-old Bruce to the Sinnoh region.

On the beach of Sandgem Town, a teenage girl named Alexandra found Bruce unconscious and burning hot from fever. Alexandra brought Bruce to her home and nursed him back to health.

When Bruce woke up, he couldn't remember his name, past, and didn't know where he was.

Several months later, Bruce regained his strength but made absolutely no progress in recalling anything. Alexandra gave Bruce a made-up name: "Bryan Winchester".

In Bruce's time in Sinnoh as Bryan, he lived an almost sedentary life. He remained withdrawn in Alexandra's home and spent most of his days cleaning, mowing the lawn, cooking, and returning the love and care to Alexandra and her pets Starly and Bidoof. Alexandra worked at the nearby Poké Mart to sustain their needs.

Over time, the relationship between Bruce and Alexandra transcended friendship and evolved into romance. The two lived their lives in peace and harmony until…

Memory Regained:
Bruce and Alexandra celebrated their one-year anniversary on Mt. Coronet. Two of Alexandra's friends, Pokémon Trainers Kennedy and Harold, escorted them through the dangerous mountain.

However, it was life and fate itself that threatened the couple and not Pokémon.

While the four of them hiked up the snowy and slippery mountain, Alexandra accidentally slipped and fell to her death. The macabre sight of Alexandra's contorted corpse traumatized Bruce, Kennedy, and Harold.

As a result, the trauma jump-started his brain; Bruce screamed as his memories rushed back to him. He eventually collapsed and would have fallen to his own death if Harold and Kennedy hadn't caught him.

The Present; Reginald Ketch:
Much has changed over a year after Alexandra's death. Bruce's parents had died. He inherited the will and legally changed his name to symbolize a new beginning.

Bruce had dyed his naturally blonde hair black. The money Bruce inherited allowed him to pursue other hobbies. He trained in Saffron Dojo, built an impressive physique and trained in various martial arts. Over in Unova, he enrolled in a music school and learned how to sing. On the cruise ship back to Kanto, Bruce met a skilled British chef whom he paid a large sum of money to teach him how to cook.

Over time, Bruce lost his fortune to gambling addiction.

Left with nowhere else to go, Bruce had come full circle. He turned to the path that started the unfortunate set of events that destroyed him. Bruce spent the last of his money on an Abra and returned to the scene as a Pokémon Trainer once more.
